Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says the 1,000 participants for next month's 2020 summit in Canberra have been chosen.

Invitations will be sent out in the next week, but so far Mr Rudd has only released 20 of the names.

Media industry heavyweight Lachlan Murdoch will sit on the panel discussing the future of Australia's economy, and former head of the armed forces, Peter Cosgrove, will be involved in the disussion on national security.

In a statement, Mr Rudd paid tribute to all applicants, saying he and the steering committee had a "very tough job" whittling the list down to just 1,000.
