What makes a Jew, a Jew?

What exactly is a Jew, how can so many different people in so many different countries which such varying cultures and beliefs all claim to have a common thread, a common identity, that being a 'Jew'?

Again...tell me..who,what and where do I "love" these people? There "system" of hatred and homicidal tendencies to others must be dealt with. It's simple.
